Are You Paying to Cool Your Attic?
How your ducts and insulation work together
In life, some things just go together. Spaghetti and meatballs, peanut butter and jelly, ducts and insulation… You see, the two work hand-in-hand to make sure you are not paying your hard earned money to keep up with an overworked air conditioner. If your ducts are not sealed you are surely pumping conditioned air into your attic causing the A/C to work harder. In addition, homes without enough insulation of the right type are throwing their money away by letting that hot air come in through the walls and attic. Don’t be one of those people overpaying to cool their home, here are some facts to help you make the change.
Rules Are Rules
The U.S. Department of Energy has declared that “sealing is required on all ducts and other air distribution components regardless of whether they are located inside or outside the conditioned living space.” Duct inspection is included in our preventative maintenance checkup, stop wearing down your A/C with unsealed ducts and poor insulation.
Duct seams must be fastened using sheet metal screws (or compression straps for flex duct) before being sealed. Mastic is always preferred to any type of tape because of its thoroughness and durability (ironically, basic “duct tape” often performs very poorly for sealing ducts). Every home is only allotted a very small amount of leakage to meet standard. Many homes today do not meet this standard and it’s costing the homeowner big money!
Visual Inspection Isn’t Enough
the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) has verified that by testing your ducts for leakage you can reduce heating and cooling costs by an average of 10% or more. Some companies only visually inspect your air duct leakage. But how can you “see” air leaking from your home? You can’t! Don’t pay to cool or heat your home’s attic anymore because of leaky ducts.
Duct leakage testing by ProMag is performed using duct pressurization equipment. There are several manufacturers that produce equipment and gauges specifically for this purpose. Duct leakage testing can also be done by whole-building pressurization equipment typically installed in a door opening of the building. We take our job seriously to ensure that homeowners and business owners are saving as much as possible on a month to month basis for there heating and cooling.
Blown-In Insulation Adds Extra Money to Your Pocket
Your ducts themselves are insulated and walls create some insulation, but that isn’t good enough. Almost all homes that were built over five years ago have poor or insufficient insulation in their walls and attic. We offer Pink Panther blown-in insulation to our customers. The fact that it’s blown-in insulation means its reaching every nook and cranny, its thermal reservoirs allow almost no unwanted air into your living space making it the best of the best when it comes to types of insulation.
Stop over paying on your power bill because of these problems. ProMag Energy Group, Inc. has an excellent preventative maintenance inspection to tell you just where your insulation and duct work stands. We have been around for over 25 years and would be happy to offer their expertise to you anytime you need it, give us a call today!
