How to Reduce AC Costs

Published by admin under Uncategorized

The weather in Florida is always changing. In the summer, one day it could be 95 degrees and the next it could be 85 and in the winter, it could be 35 degrees one day and the next 65 degrees! With these fluctuating temperatures, sometimes the cost of heating or cooling your home can be on the expensive side.

There are some things you can do in order to keep those costs lower. One idea is to clean and replace your air filters as often as recommended by a professional for your home. Each home is different on when this time is, visit our blog for more information on when to change your air filter.

Another idea is to close the blinds or drapes in your home. This reduces the heat gain in your home, making your air conditioner work a little less hard.

The third way of reducing costs for your AC unit is by turning on your fans all over the home. By doing this, you circulate the air in the home and your unit will not have to work as hard in areas where the sun creates higher heat gain. Although you may think that fans will make your electric bill go up, this is not the case because fans do not require as much energy as many think.

The last tip is to minimize the washing and drying of clothes, cooking, and showering during the day. These activities add more humidity to the air which makes more work for your AC unit. If you do intend on doing these activities during the day, be sure to use the ventilating fans.

All of these tips can result in lower home heating and cooling costs.

Are You Running Your Air Conditioner Effectively?

Living in Orlando means that you depend on your air conditioner all year long. We depend on our air conditioner to get us through these unbelievably sweltering days and muggy nights. I often think about the days before air conditioning and how people managed to get a good night sleep. My perfect sleeping temperature is 76 and many prefer it much cooler.

extreme_heat

As Floridians, we depend on our air conditioners as much as we do our cars. It is a daily necessity. As with all necessities,  it is important to keep it in tip top shape so we do not have to spend a sweat soaked night tossing and turning in misery. Here are some tips to keeping your air conditioning unit functioning at it’s best.

When you are not running your air conditioner effectively, you could pay for it with higher electric bills and maintenance calls.

One big power gobbler is setting your thermostat to 68 degrees once summer hits or 80 in the winter. Your air conditioner will continually run trying to reach these levels. If you want to be more efficient set your thermostat between 76-78 degrees during the summer and 68-70 during the winter.

Speaking of thermostats, is yours working properly? Many times the thermostat will read a higher temperature when your home is actually much cooler. This will make your air conditioner work over time and put unneeded  wear and tear on your unit and increase your power bill. If you suspect a problem with your thermostat, we recommend having a professional calibrate it for you.

Another drain on your air conditioner is the filter. We can’t say it enough, you have to change your filter or clean it (depending on what kind you have) often. At least check it once a month and if it’s dirty replace it. Some homes can go 3 months without cleaning and some will require a once per month cleaning. Your AC needs to be able to circulate the air through your home easily. If the filter is clogged it pulls the efficiency of your air conditioner down.

Lastly, put your air conditioner on a regular maintenance schedule. Your car needs a maintenance schedule to make sure that the fluid levels are right and that all the parts are functioning the way that they should. The same goes for your air conditioner, refrigerant levels need to be checked, the coils need cleaning, and an overall check should be done once per year for your air conditioning unit to function as efficiently as possible.

Chinese Drywall and Your Air Conditioner

Published by admin under Uncategorized

“Thousands of U.S. homes tainted by Chinese drywall should be gutted, according to new guidelines released Friday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission”.

If you have seen the news at all the last couple of years you have seen the reports on the trouble the drywall from China has caused new homeowners over the last two years.

It started in 2006 with reports of a rotten egg smell and throat and nose irritations. As time passes, the amount of overall damage this bad drywall has caused is coming to light.

chinese-drywall-50011

According to the New Guidelines, anything containing copper needs to be removed and replaced. The above photo is a picture of air conditioner coils showing evidence of corrosion. Eventually the corrosion will cause the coils to spring leaks and the home owner will be in need of an immediate AC repair. All homeowners should check their AC coils for evidence of corrosion or damage to prevent emergency repair situations.

What are home owners doing about it?

“About 2,100 homeowners have filed suit in federal court in New Orleans against Chinese manufacturers and U.S. companies that sold the drywall. U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon is expected to rule soon in a pivotal case against the Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co., the only Chinese company that has responded to U.S. suits.

Separate claims by thousands more homeowners against Chinese manufacturers are pending, said Jordan Chaikin, a Florida lawyer whose firm represents about 1,000 homeowners.

This has no doubt been a very exhausting and frustrating struggle for the many homeowners affected by this tainted drywall. I can’t even imagine being told that my new home has to be gutted and I have to start over. Our thoughts are with the homeowners for a satisfactory end to all the chaos the Chinese drywall has caused.

If your Orlando home was damaged by the drywall and you are in need of AC repair due to corrosion around your coils, please call your Orlando AC Repair Specialists, PROMAG ENERGY GROUP for an estimate……..407-380-5560

No Savings In Daylight-Saving Time!

Published by admin under Uncategorized

I wanted to share this information I found on the Grist Blog…According to Professor Matthew Kotchen and his PhD student Laura E. Grant, both from the University of California at Santa Barbara, Daylight- Saving Time wastes energy! US News had listed some facts about DST. One was that DST was set into place during World War 1 to help us conserve energy but the findings of the Kotchen/ Grant Paper report that consumers paid over $8 million more in electric bills than areas in the US that do not acknowledge.

Hopefully this report and many others like it i.e., the  Australian Study will encourage our nation to abolish the Daylight-Saving Time program!

“Smart” Roof Coating Made Out of Old Cooking Oil

Published by admin under Uncategorized

This is the latest and greatest in energy saving roof coatings. It is a coating for your roof made out of discarded cooking oil from restaurants! Does this mean in the summertime our roofs smell like french fries?

So far this coating surpasses all the other energy saving roof coatings. What makes it so special? Well unlike it’s predecessors, this coating reflects heat in the summer and absorbs it in the winter time. Thus, saving you big $$ on your heating and cooling bills. The other less adequate coatings will save energy in the summer or winter but not both.

Anything that reflects the heat in Orlando and saves money on my air conditioning bill is welcome at my home!

Read all about this at the American Chemical Society.

Energy Efficiency and Your Windows.

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Stop throwing your money out the window! A major culprit in wasted energy is the windows in your home. Are your windows old or poorly caulked? The Orlando heat and humidity causes the caulking around your windows to quickly deteriorate. Replacing the old caulk every 2-3 years will help save on your power bills and air conditioner repair bills.

If your home has old windows (20-30 years), it would be a good idea to replace them. Windows made today are crafted to be energy efficient. I have installed a new window on the west side of my home that gets the full blast of the extreme 3:30 Orlando sun. What makes this window unique is that when the sun hits it, the window automatically tints itself! It is not too late to apply for the $1500 tax credit for adding energy efficient items to your home. You have until April 15th to file.

Window blinds are also an option. “When properly installed, window shades can be one of the simplest and most effective window treatments for saving energy.”

Promag Energy Group recommends checking the caulking around your windows, consider window blinds, and if you are able, replace outdated windows.

Tips For Buying a New Air Conditioning Unit

Published by admin under Uncategorized

If you are in need of a new air conditioning unit in the Orlando area, I have put together a few tips to help you with the process.

  • Make sure the company is licensed and insured.
  • Don’t be tempted to purchase a unit from the lowest bidding Orlando air conditioning company. You want the job done right so be willing to pay for the time it will take to properly install your new Orlando air conditioning unit.
  • Make sure the unit you’re buying isn’t to big for your home. An over-sized unit obviously uses more electric, turns on and off more often, and just isn’t efficient. Contractors should calculate how much cooling a home needs according to the guidelines set forth in the Manual J of the Air Conditioner Contractors of America (ACCA).
  • Always purchase Energy Star units. New air conditioners should have a SEER of 13 or higher.  Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the SEER the more efficient the unit will be.

Promag Energy Group of Orlando offers AC repair and air conditioning maintenance services on all brands of residential air conditioning and heating systems. Our AC technicians are always ready to provide you with quality services. Each technician receives on going training.

Ultra Violet Light Vs. Mold, Bacteria and Viruses.

Published by admin under Uncategorized

I found this great short video on UV-Light and how it kills mold, bacteria and viruses in your AC ducts and AC system.  Promag Energy Group uses Ultra Violet Light when cleaning the air ducts in the Orlando to Fort Pierce areas. As you know, many Orlando air conditioners are a breeding ground for mold due to the high humidity we experience for about 10 months out of the year. UV light provides a very effective and non-toxic way to extinguish what ever may be growing in your Orlando Air Conditioning system. Enjoy the video.
